Aathisoodi - 13th Century Didactic Poetry - Avvayar - 1 to 10


Aathisoodi is a didactic poetry book written by Avvayar, a lady poet, in 13th Century AD in Tamil language. It consists of 108 small verses which summarises the life lessons in maximum of 4 words per verse.


1. aram seyya virumbu - Be willing to offer help to the needy


Even if you can’t help or support others in any way, at least be inclined to do so.


2. aaruvadhu sinam - Anger should not prolong


Anger should not extend endlessly. It should be diverted very shortly so that it does not affect our life in an unpleasant way.


3. eyalvadhu karaVel - Don’t hide what you can offer


Do not hesitate to showcase what you can offer to others. Be open and ready to help.


4. eevadhu vilakkEl- Don’t stop helping others


Do not stop offering whatever you can to others at any point. Don’t say I won’t or I don’t want to.


5. udayadhu viLamBel - Don’t showcase your wealth too much


Do not showcase your wealth and status too much in public. Show only the necessities.


6. ookkamadhu kaiviDel - Don’t loose your spirit


Do not let your heart give up on your goals. Keep it pumped always.


7. eN ezhuthu igaZhel - Don’t poke fun at the informed


If you try to cheat a learned person, you will land in trouble.


8. Erpadhu igazhchi - Don’t accept flattery or disrespect easily


Do not take a materialistic compliment or a hostile attitude without due diligence.


9. Iyamittu uN - Share and savour your meal


Share a portion of your food to the famished and then savour the rest yourself.


10. oppuravu ozhugu - Be a part of the world


You theories may be different inside from rest of the world, but go with the flow of the outer  world.
